Building various types of team compositions is at the heart of Honkai: Star Rail’s gameplay — that’s what lead designer Chengnan An said in an interview. Naturally, the key to all that is the game’s flourishing line-up of characters full of different archetypes, personalities, and designs.

Characters in HSR follow a Path, which roughly corresponds to something like a class, and have a certain damage type, making them strong against specific enemies. Beyond that, though, they all have roles to play in different kinds of playstyles, such as the Break or Follow-Up styles. In short: It’s a good idea to know your way around the character roster before making pull choices.
