Being a Vampire sucks. Sure, you get some cool new magical abilities, but you take damage just from being in the sunlight, and if anyone so much as flicks a spark of flame in your direction, you’ll instantly be turned to dust. So, if you accidentally become a Vampire in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion (or deliberately if you’re a masochist) you’ll definitely want to seek out a cure.

Thankfully, there is one, but it isn’t easy. We’ll explain how to become a Vampire in Oblivion and how to rid yourself of the affliction once you have it.

How to become a Vampire

There are three ways to become a Vampire.

First, whenever a Vampire attacks you, it has a chance to infect you with the Porphyric Hemophilia disease. Once you have this, simply wait 72 in-game hours and the next time you sleep you’ll wake up as a Vampire – if you don’t want to become one, simply drink a Potion of Cure Disease before 72 hours pass.

Second is to join the Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion. If you complete all of Vicente Valtieri’s quests as a member of the group, you can ask him about a “Dark Gift” and he will offer to turn you into a Vampire.

Finally, in the Mehrunes’ Razor DLC quest included in Oblivion Remastered, you can consume the Beating Heart from Msirae Faythung to become both a Vampire and a Cannibal. Specifically, it’ll infect you with Porphyric Hemophilia. Once again, wait 72 hours for the transformation to take hold, then if you want, you can drink a Potion of Cure Disease to remove the Cannibalism.

How to cure Vampirism

To cure Vampirism, you need to talk to Raminus Polus, who can be found in the Arcane University in the Imperial City. He hangs out in the lobby, so you don’t need to join the Mages Guild to reach him.

Ask him about it, and you’ll begin the quest “Vampirism Cure”. Raminus will point you to Janus Hassildor in Skingrad, who will agree to help you make the potion provided you help his wife, who is suffering from the same affliction. He will then point you to Melisande at Drakelowe, who asks you to find five empty Grand Soul Gems. The best way to find them is to talk to the merchants in the Mages Guild halls, as they will usually have a couple for sale.

Bring the gems to Melisande and she’ll give you a list of ingredients for the potion:

  • Ashes of a Powerful Vampire
  • Bloodgrass
  • Blood of an Argonian
  • Garlic
  • Nightshade

Gather them all up and return to Melisande, who will then tell you to wait a day for the potion to be complete. Wait 24 hours and return to finally get your potion. Consume it and your Vampirism will be undone and you’ll get a second non-consumable potion to give to Hassildor for a reward.

That is a lot of legwork for a cure, although doing it this way prevents you from ever becoming infected again, unless you use console commands. Speaking of, if you don’t mind cheating and just want to be rid of your Vampirism immediately, you can type “player. additem 977E4 1” into the console to immediately give yourself the potion.
