Fighting valiantly for the Fighters Guild or studying under the Mages Guild is all well and good, but sometimes you want the thrill of doing something sneaky. Thankfully, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is happy to oblige as it has its very own Thieves Guild for you to join, letting you loot to your heart's content.

Given that it’s a guild of criminals who don’t want to be found, you’ll have to put in some legwork if you want to find and join them, though, so we’ll explain the different methods you can use to do so.

There are actually three ways to join the Thieves Guild that are all quite different.

First, you can go to jail. Seems counterintuitive, but shortly after being released, a member of the guild will contact you and tell you to go to the Waterfront District at midnight for a secret meeting.

If that’s not your style, then you can instead investigate the Grey Fox and try to track him down. In the Imperial City, you’ll find Wanted posters for the Grey Fox. Reading one will add the Grey Fox as a conversation topic for everyone in the city. Do so, and residents will tell you the city’s beggars are his agents. Find a beggar (they’re mostly found in the Waterfront District) and raise their favour until they’re willing to tell you about the secret midnight meeting.

The last method can be found in Bravil. Talk to City-Swimmer the Argonian and speak about Bravil. She’ll tell about the law-abiding citizens of Bravil (note that if she talks about Oblivion Gates instead, you’ll need to progress the main quest to get the right dialogue). When you’re prompted for a response, say “Gosh. The Thieves Guild? What’s That?” which will unlock The Grey Fox as a conversation topic. Select it and you’ll learn about the meeting at midnight.

Regardless of which method you choose, show up for the secret midnight meeting, and the Thieves Guild questline will begin. We recommend you join the Fighters Guild first though, as the Thieves Guild quests all earn you infamy points, which can make it harder to join the Fighters later.
