Sony and Bungie have revealed that Marathon will be released on September 23, 2025, on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Set decades after the original games, the team-based extraction shooter returns players to Tau Ceti IV and throws them into a tough competition with each other. Teams consist of three users and will scavenge the devastated colony for anything of value, such as weapons and gear. The ruins, naturally, are not without danger. Aside from competing players, NPC forces lay in wait.

Marathon is a true extraction shooter in the sense that players get to keep everything valuable they’ve found on their expedition if they make it out alive — and lose it all if they don’t. There is hero shooter paint on Marathon’s coat as well, as each character – called Runner – comes with their own abilities, stats, and playstyles, which you can then customize with all the loot you find.

Bungie stated that selected players have had access to Marathon “the earliest” it’s ever invited outsiders to a game in development to shape its direction.

“When we first started playtesting, maps acted more like a persistent world,” commented game director Joe Ziegler on the PlayStation Blog. “So you could drop in and out of the same map server instance multiple times. But we heard this made matches feel unfair and unpredictable, like someone could just be camping spawns forever, or the loot you were going for could’ve already been taken.”

As a result, the match format was changed to everyone getting a fresh start into each game. With Marathon having finally been revealed, more playtest with expanded participation will be happening, the first being a closed alpha test later in April.
