Nintendo warns of potential Switch 2 supply issues due to high demand

The company is surprised by Switch 2 demand “beyond our original expectations.”

Shuntaro Furukawa, the president of Nintendo, has issued a statement on social media in which he warned fans of potential Switch 2 shortages when the console launches. He wrote that about 2.2 million applications to buy the console reached the company in Japan alone, a demand “far beyond our original expectations,” and stated that the number of units Nintendo can deliver on launch day has been exceeded by the number of interested buyers. Anyone who registered for pre-ordering the console will get a response on April 24, 2025, be it positive or negative.

Furukawa apologized to customers for being unable to process everyone’s request immediately and said that everyone not getting the green light on their pre-order on April 24 at least won’t have to sign up for the next round of applications, as they’ll be added automatically. This’ll likely be the case for the following wave as well, though, as the president already warned fans that the company won’t “be able to respond to all applications, including those for the second lottery.”

Nintendo is currently working on intensifying production, Furukawa said, but obviously that’s not something that can be solved overnight. He reassured customers that the manufacturer is going to build Switch 2 consoles for a long time, so no one will miss out on the product — some may find their patience to be tested in the process, though.

The Japanese company previously stated that it built up enough supplies to weather the initial onslaught on the Switch 2, but that promise evidently did not hold up for very long, which may not be a surprise to anyone other than Nintendo itself. The Switch is one of the most popular and successful gaming consoles of all time — any successor would have massive momentum behind itself based on that fact alone.
