​There are three different ways players can unlock characters in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. He can be unlocked after being beaten in World of Light, the game's story mode, VS mode, and in Classic mode.

In Classic mode, Ness will appear as a challenger after playing a game as Kirby. Defeating Ness will add him to the roster of playable characters. The same can be done in VS mode to unlock him. In World of Light, he will be beaten and unlocked in the Magicant Land.

More than 60 characters can be unlocked and played in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
