The Earth Badge can be obtained once players defeat Giovanni in Viridian City. Giovanni has very strong Pokémon but can be taken down easily if countered correctly.

Giovanni specializes in Ground-type Pokémon, meaning all of the Pokémon on his team are a Ground type. Giovanni has a Dugtrio (Ground, level 49), Nidoking (Poison/Ground, level 49), Rhydon (Ground, level 50), Nidoqueen (Poison/Ground, level 49) in his team. They can all be devastating if against a Fire-type or Electric-type. 

The best way to take down Giovanni's Pokémon will be with a Water-type. So if the player has a high-level Blastoise or other Water Pokémon, they'll have no trouble. Ice and Grass-type moves will also be super effective against his team.
