Assassin's Creed: Valhalla Update 1.2.0 Transmog System Sparks Ire
By Jack O'Dwyer
Ubisoft's latest title update for Assassin's Creed: Valhalla adds the long-awaited transmogrification mechanic, as well as a free gift and the beginning of the Ostara Festival.
Title Update 1.2.0 went live on Tuesday, March 16, bringing a host of new content and mechanics to Ubisoft's twelfth major installment in the Assassin's Creed franchise. Developers have finally added transmogrification (transmog) to Assassin's Creed: Valhalla four months after its release, satisfying the pleas of fans looking to match their favorite style to their favorite gear stats. Additionally, they've implemented support for the pagan spring festival, Ostara, set to begin on March 18, among other free rewards.
Assassin's Creed: Valhalla Update 1.2.0 Adds Transmog
Though brief, developers touched on several improvements in their patch notes. The most important, of course, was the addition of transmog.
Players can now change the appearance of their gear following the latest update. Items can have their appearances swapped with any other of the same category for the price of 50 silver per change. Transmogs can only be done by Gunnar, the blacksmith, in Ravensthorpe. Each item with a transmogrified appearance will be marked with a star in Eivor's inventory.
Unfortunately, this isn't all the change players hoped it would be. Several were irritated by the fact they had to pay to change their gear appearance when the feature had been free in previous games. Others took issue with its limited application—how they had to visit the blacksmith in their settlement for every appearance change when it had previously been available on the fly. Players can't even see what their gear looks like before confirming the changes.
don't"I just dont understand how Odyssey had such an awesome transmog system and then in their next installments of the series it's absent only to later be added and once more be a massive downgrade," wrote Ubisoft forums user Asgardian02 in a post detailing the ire against the new system.
"How is any of that necessary? It is almost like the devs resented having to put transmog in so they made it stupid to annoy us," user KnightofTara replied.
Some even accused the company of pushing for microtransactions as players can purchase silver for real currency through the in-game store.
Users on Reddit's Assassin's Creed Valhalla subreddit board seemed to disagree, however.
"Personally, I think they smashed it out of the park. They've listened, given a shed load of freebies away, and implemented a way to get rid of the stupid gold armor. Well done Ubisoft," user moreboredthanyouare wrote.
Ubisoft has yet to issue a statement regarding player reaction.
