Fan Theories Arise Over New Overwatch 2 'Fox' Hero
By Jack O'Dwyer
The end of Overwatch 2's second PVP beta period has concluded with a possible hint toward the next hero.
Blizzard Entertainment certainly isn't being shy about its new fox hero. On top of the teaser revealed a month ago with the game's release date trailer, eagle-eyed fans have recently spotted another sign that they could be seeing another addition to the Overwatch 2 roster.
Following the beta period's conclusion, fans were greeted with a little secret code — not unlike the one used to reveal Sombra in 2016. Thanks to some quick thinking from Twitter user @Hayzelet, we finally know what it means. When translated from Base64, the code reads back: "What does the fox say."
Could Overwatch 2's New Fox Hero be Master Swordswoman Asa Yamagami?
Some believe that this new hero may end up being Asa Yamagami, the old swordsmaster of the Shimada Clan. She, alongside her husband, the blacksmith Toshiro Yamagami, ran a shop called Yamagami Blades in Kanezaka, Japan.
While running the shop, Asa was chosen to teach Hanzo and Genji swordsmanship. Toshiro was later kidnapped by the Hashimoto Clan sometime later and forced to forge weapons for them — while also forcing Asa into the middle of the conflict for Hashimoto's benefit.
The two exchanged letters over the years. At one point Toshiro was able to send their daughter a sword as a gift, to which Asa wrote in response hoping that the blades he made for the Hashimoto clan weren't nearly as sharp as their daughter's. Eventually, Yamagami Blades had to be closed.
Asa wrote Toshiro shortly after this to fill him in on the events transpiring in Kanezuka. She and their daughter moved up the second level above the shop. Strangely, several shipments of Hashimoto contraband started to go missing alongside the appearance of messages that were hastily scribbled over.
At the end of this letter, Asa wrote that she will be making an offering at the Fox shrine before attempting to find out who is stealing the shipments.
For this reason, many believe she is the mysterious fox hero, and may just be playing dumb as to not get caught for the years she was forced to essentially work for the Hashimoto Clan to keep her husband safe. Others have a different theory: the fox hero responsible for causing trouble for the Hashimoto Clan is the unnamed daughter of the Yamagami's — attempting to exact her own revenge for a similar reason.
