FUT Week in Review: EA Sports Delivers the Goods for Ultimate Scream
By Max Mallow
EA Sports, you've done it.
You've finally delivered a brilliant week of content in FIFA 20. Not only did you supply us with ample non-promotional cards and Squad Building Challenges, but you hit a home run with Ultimate Scream.
Traditionally a promotion to forget, FIFA 20's Ultimate Scream is not only the best of the year so far, but also the best Ultimate Scream promotion of all time.
FIFA 20 Ultimate Scream is a Home Run
Ultimate Scream, one of the first promotions in a FUT cycle since FIFA 17, was historically one of the worst promotions of the year. Cards received random, temporary boosts that seemed ineffective and useless.
Now, EA Sports decided to give the Scream team permanent upgrades to player relevant categories. Nicolas Otamendi, whose base gold card is forgetful, received a +24 to his pace. Instantly, he became a viable option. But that's not all:
EA Sports announced 11 new players would receive permanent boosts this week, making Ultimate Scream a multi-week event. Sure, that means fewer cards in packs to grind for, but it gives longevity to the promotion.
To top it all off: six puzzle SBCs spread across the weekend, an objective Edin Dzeko, and SBC James Milner and Jesus Navas.
Hats off to EA Sports.
FIFA 20 Squad Building Challenges: Four New Player SBCs
As if Ultimate Scream wasn't enough, EA Sports released four new player SBCs this week:
- MLS Player of the Month Carlos Vela
- End of an Era Bastian Schweinsteiger
- Ligue 1 Player of the Month Victor Osimhen
- Bundesliga Player of the Month Amine Harit
Vela and Osimhen were must-completes for FIFA 20 players as these budget super subs provided great value for coins. Harit ended up being the worst of the bunch coming in around 60,000 coins, but it's not a terrible card. It's just low value for coins.
Schweinsteiger was a tough one. It's a brilliant card, but it's hard to link and was pretty expensive.
TOTW 6 Predictions FIFA 20: Major Leagues Are Back
TOTW 6 predictions are flying in as the major leagues returned from international break. Here are six players likely to get a Team of the Week card:
- Wissam Ben Yedder: Two Goals (game winner in stoppage time)
- Romelu Lukaku: Two Goals
- Lautaro Martinez: Two Goals
- Angel Di Maria: Two Goals
- Ciro Immobile: Two Goals and an Assist
- Frederik Ronnow: 10 Saves, Clean Sheet, Man of the Match
EA Sports has been reluctant to give Ones to Watch cards in-forms, but at the very least Ben Yedder needs one for his performance.
FIFA 20 Pitch Notes: Major Gameplay Updates Arrive
EA Sports released a major patch to FIFA 20. The Ultimate Team section provided quality of life changes that were missing at launch and patched the Fitness bug.
Albeit a minor change, rank thresholds now appear for Rivals and Squad Battles. Additionally, there were major changes to gameplay including skill moves and goalkeeper AI.
Check out the full patch notes for more information on gameplay updates.
FUT Week in Review Roundup
Grade: A
EA Sports, you deserve a round of applause. This was the first complete week of content in FIFA 20.
Prices, value for coins and rewards are always up for debate, but there's no disputing the amount of content players received. The best Scream promotion ever and four new player SBCs might not be the standard moving forward, but let's enjoy the present.
