Genshin Impact Elemental Reactions Guide

Elemental reactions are a key part of combat in Genshin Impact, and it's necessary to understand them if players wish to build strong teams capable of taking on difficult content. Here's everything you need to know about elemental reactions.
Elemental reactions are effects that trigger when two different elements are applied onto the same character or monster. Depending on which two elements caused a reaction, the reaction could deal damage, amplify damage, or trigger unique effects. Utilizing these effects is key to maximizing your team's damage.
Genshin Impact Elemental Reactions Guide
There are two types of elemental reactions: Amplifying and Transformative.
Amplifying Reactions
Amplifying reactions multiply the amount of damage dealt by the skill that triggered it by either 1.5x or 2x. The damage also scales with the Elemental Mastery of the triggering character, and it can critically strike.
- Melt occurs when Pyro DMG is applied to a target affected by Cryo. The Pyro DMG is multiplied by 2.
- Reverse Melt occurs when Cryo DMG is applied to a target affected by Pyro. The Cryo DMG is multiplied by 1.5.
- Vaporize occurs when Hydro DMG is applied to a target affected by Pyro. The Hydro DMG is multiplied by 2.
- Reverse Vaporize occurs when Pyro DMG is applied to a target affected by Hydro. The Pyro DMG is multiplied by 1.5.
Transformative Reactions
Transformative reactions apply an additional instance of damage on top of the damage of the skill that triggered it. The damage scales with the triggering character's level and Elemental Mastery, and cannot critically strike. Most transformative reactions also include additional effects.
- Overloaded triggers by combining Electro and Pyro on a target. It causes an AoE explosion that knocks back enemies and deals Pyro DMG.
- Electro-charged triggers by combining Electro and Hydro on a target. It causes sparks of electricity, dealing Electro DMG over time to the target and nearby enemies that are Wet. Unlike most elemental reactions, the targets remain affected by both Electro and Hydro over time.
- Superconduct triggers by combining Electro and Cryo on a target. It deals AoE Cryo DMG and reduces the physical resistance of all enemies affected by 40% for 12 seconds.
- Frozen triggers by combining Hydro and Cryo on a target, which immobilizes it. The target can then be Shattered with a heavy attack including claymores, plunge attacks, explosions, or Geo DMG. Shatter deals Physical DMG and unfreezes the target.
- Swirl triggers by applying Anemo to a target already affected by Pyro, Hydro, Electro, or Cryo. It spreads the non-Anemo element to other enemies in an AoE, and deals DMG of that element.
Finally, there are two more reactions that function a bit differently.
- Crystallize occurs when Geo is applied to a target already affected by Pyro, Hydro, Electro, or Cryo. It deals no damage; instead, it drops an elemental shard of the corresponding non-Geo element. When players pick up the shard, they receive an elemental shield of the same element.
- Burning occurs when Pyro is applied to a target already affected by Dendro. It deals Pyro DMG over time. There are currently no ways to apply Dendro to a target, so this reaction is mainly useful for burning down opponents' wooden shields.
These are all the elemental reactions that currently exist in Genshin Impact. Many players prefer Melt and Vaporize reactions due to their higher damage; but with the release of Inazuma, the Electro nation, right around the corner, there's a good chance Electro will have its place in the spotlight, too.
