Genshin Impact Pity System: How It Works
By Jack O'Dwyer
Genshin Impact Pity System could be the key for players to truly get their money's worth out of the gacha "Wishes" system.
The Pity System within miHoYo's open-world fantasy RPG, Genshin Impact, works with its Wishes gacha system to protect player monetary investments. Essentially, if the player's luck is extraordinarily poor when using Wishes to get gear, the Pity System steps in to hand them a good pull at no additional cost to them.

As stated above, the Pity System ensures that players get at least some of their money's worth from the gacha system. Genshin Impact utilizes two types of Wishes in its system, which players can purchase with money. These function much like random loot boxes which hold an assortment of gear. Each Wish costs around 160 Primogems or ~$2 USD.
Wishes are sorted into Weapon and Character categories.
Weapon-based Wishes have three, four, and five-star items available to be pulled. Three-star is the most common with a 93.3% rate. Four-star items can be pulled at a 6% rate and five-star items have a 0.7% rate.
Character-based Wishes also have three, four, and five-star individuals available. Three-star characters are the most common with a 94.3% pull rate. Four-star characters can be pulled at a 5.1% rate and five-star characters have a 0.6% rate.
With the Pity System in place, players are guaranteed a four-star prize for every tenth pull without one and a five-star weapon for every eightieth pull without one, respectively. These counters are reset upon the pull of either corresponding-star prize.
