Is Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion a Sequel?
With Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion just around the corner, those unfamiliar with the game might be wondering whether or not it's a sequel.
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion, remaster of the 2007 PSP title Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, is set to release on Dec. 13, 2022. The remaster was announced back in June, as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations of the original Final Fantasy VII.
As one of Square Enix's most anticipated titles of this year, many fans have been anxious to get their hands on Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion. But, not every Final Fantasy fan might have had a PSP back in the day, instead experiencing Crisis Core for the first time through this remaster.
For many, the game creates a lot of questions. Like, where does it fit into the Final Fantasy VII timeline, and is it a sequel?
Is Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion a Sequel?
Like the original Crisis Core, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion is a prequel to Final Fantasy VII. Set seven years prior to the events of Final Fantasy VII, Crisis Core follows Zack Fair, a young Shinra SOLDIER operative, as he uncovers the dark secrets of Shinra’s experiments.
Fans are expecting Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion to differ slightly from the original, despite being a remaster rather than a remake. This has been hinted at by the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, beginning with Final Fantasy VII Remake and set to continue with the second release: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
Those that played Final Fantasy VII Remake will have noticed that the game doesn't follow the exact events of the original game, offering some slightly different story branches this time around. Because of this, many are suspecting that the game's sequels will also differ from the original, suggesting that Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion will have some new moments to tie-in with the Remake trilogy.
Of course, Square Enix has yet to confirm if there will be any deviations to Crisis Core's story. But, with the release date just a few weeks away, it won't be long before we find out.
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion will release on Dec. 13, 2022 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC.
