Mewtwo Raid Pokémon Sword and Shield: How to Beat Mewtwo
By Andrew Lin
Mewtwo Raid Pokémon Sword and Shield sees the introduction of the Genetic Pokémon to Sword and Shield. Here's how to find the Raid for Mewtwo in Pokémon Sword and Shield.
To celebrate Pokémon Day, Mewtwo and the original starts Bulbasaur, Squirtle and Charmander will be available to fight in Max Raid Battles in Pokémon Sword and Shield. You'll be able to participate in the Mewtwo Max Raid Battle from 4 p.m. Feb. 26 to 3:59 p.m. March 1 in Pacific Time.
Mewtwo Raid Pokémon Sword and Shield
First, you'll have to receive the Wild Area News, which will be automatic if your Switch is connected to the internet. If you don't have it, you can download it with Mystery Gift.
From here, you just have to look around for the Mewtwo Raid in the Wild Area. Unfortunately, this Mewtwo is not able to be captured upon defeat. It will still be worth challenging Mewtwo, as your reward will instead be rare items and a lot of Exp Candy. Among the rare item drops, you may get Ability Capsules, which are only available otherwise by grinding the Battle Tower or as entry gifts in tournaments.
You will want to take on Mewtwo with some friends, because the partner AI in Raid battles is notoriously terrible. You will almost never be able to complete a high level raid solo with the AI.
Mewtwo is a pure Psychic type, meaning it is weak to Bug, Ghost and Dark type moves. As a Dynamax battle, Mewtwo will only use Dynamax moves but its moveset will be randomized for each encounter. You will want a team with balanced roles to take on Mewtwo. It will mostly use Psychic moves, but watch out for the Fighting type Aura Sphere if you plan on negating Psychic with Dark.
Grimmsnarl works well as support for this fight, as its Prankster ability lets it get status moves like Taunt or Light Screen with increased Priority. Mewtwo can buff its stats with Bulk Up or Calm Mind, which will make the encounter get out of hand quickly.
From here, you'll want some buffed out Bug, or Ghost type Pokémon. Be careful with Gengar, as it is actually part Poison and will be weak to Psychic. If you have Pokémon Home, you can bring over Lunala or Dawn Wings Necrozma. A personal favorite of mine is Polteageist, whose Weak Armor ability and Shell Smash lets it set up as a nasty sweeper. Aura Sphere passes right through Ghost types, so they're recommended over Dark types Pokémon.
Your Pokémon should also be EV trained to some degree to make this fight go as smoothly as possible. Get your friends and your strongest Pokémon!
