Overwatch 2 has been highly anticipated since its announcement at Blizzcon 2019. However, given a recent interview with Genji’s Korean voice actor, Kim Hye-sung, it seems that the game may take longer than originally expected to release.

In the interview on the “PlayersCUT” YouTube channel, Kim Hye-sung was asked about his role in Overwatch 2. In response to the question he revealed that he is still a part of the Overwatch team, but he has not recorded any lines for the upcoming game.

Reddit user u/Evenstar6132 translated the exchange where Kim Hye-sung said “What’s going on, Blizzard? I’m not fired, am I?” His, perhaps, the joking tone could be masking a real issue that could explain the situation. It is possible that Kim Hye-sung was simply not brought on to voice Genji for Overwatch 2, and that Blizzard decided to go with another voice actor. This is not unheard of, but it would be strange for Blizzard to replace any of their iconic voice actors which players have become so accustomed to.

Another possible explanation could be that the game is so severely delayed in its production that Blizzard has not even begun to record voice lines for the game. Blizzard, as a company, is no stranger to delayed or canceled games. Starcraft: Ghost and their would-be MMO “Titan” being the two highest-profile cancelations. However, Overwatch 2 is an extremely high profile game, and Blizzard is not likely to cancel the upcoming sequel. This does not disqualify it from production troubles which may delay its release though.

Recently, Activision-Blizzard has been embroiled in a hiring controversy after reports came out that the company was resisting requests by the ALF-CIO to implement diversity standards similar to the NFL in the hiring process. Fans were expecting Overwatch 2 to be released as soon as summer 2020, but Blizzard has yet to release an official date for the game’s release.
