Niantic Labs has announced a new Pokemon GO event meant to celebrate Día de los Muertos, the Mexican holiday also known as "Day of the Dead."

Día de los Muertos typically takes place on Nov. 1-2 and celebrates those honored family members and friends who have passed on. It is often depicted as a celebration, popularly marked by the building of an ofrenda—an altar within a family's home decorated with images and favorite items of the deceased, as well as several cultural offerings such as pan de muerto. Celebrants often wear decorated skull masks—sometimes known as calacas—and make sweets in the shape of skulls with the deceased's name inscribed on the forehead.

Here's what we know about how Niantic plans to bring the spirit of this holiday into Pokemon GO.
