Should You Free Orpheus in Baldur's Gate 3?

Bladur's Gate 3 is highly praised for its lore and expansive options for players. There's one choice that many people struggle with. Several players can't decide whether or not they should save Orpheus from prison.

Here's a little backstory. Orpheus is the prince of the Githyanki, a race known for its strength and bravery. At the beginning of Act 3, we learn that Orpheus is trapped in the Astral Prism by a Mind Flayer called the Emperor. The Emperor says he has done so to keep the Absolute at bay, so is it best to set the Githyanki prince free?

Whether or not you should free Orpheus is a complex decision with no easy answer. There are pros and cons to consider. 

If you free the prince, he'll make a strong ally. He can jump in some fights, and it'll be easier to defeat ruthless enemies. Rescuing Orpheus will also benefit Lae'zel's storyline. Save him if you care about the Githyanki warrior and she's part of your team. 

You must use the Orphic Hammer to break the chains that bind Orpheus. Raphael can help you obtain the item. Players can make a pact with the devil and surrender the Crown of Karsus, though doing so will give him the power to conquer the Nine Hells. 

Players can get the hammer in different ways without helping Raphael. Either way, the Orphic Hammer is a legendary item that will be a major help in battles. It's a melee weapon that can be held or thrown at enemies, dealing significant damage.

The downside of freeing the Githyanki Prince involves your relationship with the Emperor. Freeing Orpheus will anger the Mind Flayer, and he's another powerful ally who can be helpful in your journey. Rescuing the prince may also introduce moral conflicts and unforeseen consequences. 

Ultimately, the decision to free Orpheus is up to you. There is no right or wrong answer. The best choice depends on your preferences.
